Fresh-to-go Sandwiches are becoming a C-Store Staple

The C-Store is no longer just the destination for people to buy cigarettes and sodas. Many people are turning to c-stores to purchase convenient meals that can be consumed on-the-go.

Packaged sandwiches alone had a sales increase of 5.1% over the past year, bringing it to an approximately 750 million dollar industry (and this does not include made-to-order sandwiches!)

Sandwiches have been around for as long as anyone can remember but it’s the portability and convenience that is especially drawing customers to them now.

Convenience and portability are especially important for millennials and single people, who would rather pick up a sandwich at a convenience store for dinner than cook or visit a sit-down restaurant by themselves.

Packaging technology has been improving the to-go sandwich experience by allowing c-stores to keep products fresh for a longer duration of time. Placing to-go sandwiches near other fresh items like salads and fruit cups will further demonstrate to the customer that the sandwich is fresh and delicious.

According to the menu research firm Datassential, the top 5 sandwiches in America are Turkey, Ham, Chicken, Sub, and Deli Salads (such as chicken salad or tuna salad). Consumers prefer to eat the majority of these sandwiches cold.
