Salty Snack Trends: The New Comfort Food?

While they remain impulse-driven, the increasing prevalence of snacking as a replacement for meals is having a positive effect on both the salty snacks and alternative snacks categories. New products, increased variety, higher in-store traffic, and healthier products are among the trends  expected to have the biggest impact on the salty snacks category.

Unusual, bold flavors continue to be requested by consumers as well as a combination of indulgent and healthy, natural ingredients. Looking further into 2018, it is anticipated that flavor trends will be inspired by gourmet cuisine and food and drink trends, such as the craft beer movement and smoked meats and cheeses.

Interestingly enough, research found that in 2017 62% of consumers were eating salty snacks as a stress reliever, compared to only 16% the prior year…. Perhaps the category is now a new comfort food.
